The science fiction genre and all the subgenres derived over time represent many things, but it rests its foundations above all on the concept of vision:
there is no certainty about tomorrow, someone once said, but it is precisely thanks to comics like
Nathan Never, video games like The Last
of Us and novels like the recent The Three-Body Problem that we can
cast a glance into the future. A dark and unsettling future, for example, is the one
outlined by James Cameron’s cinematic masterpiece, Terminator, starring the indestructible, and very young (at least
at the beginning!) Arnold Schwarzenegger!
A full forty years after its release in cinemas around the world (it was 1984), the saga of the nearly indestructible cyborgs and the resistance, which fights for humanity’s survival by traveling back and forth along the precarious line of time, still retains its appeal, and the proof is the new project involving it: Terminator Survivors is in development and there are many reasons to get excited, we can be sure of that.
We are not nationalists around here, but it is noteworthy that an Italian software house is handling the development of the new iteration of the American franchise: Nacom Studio Milan. Known mainly for their forays into racing games, the guys at Nacom have taken on this project with enthusiasm and dedication, as evidenced by the screenshots and making-of videos of the game, which have already given us some tasty previews of gameplay and plot.
Terminator: Survivors is set
exactly after the first two iconic films, which, for anyone who doesn’t know and
has therefore been living with their head under the sand in recent decades, see Sarah
Connor first and then her teenage son John, in the sequel, having to survive
the relentless assaults of the Terminators, anthropomorphic killing machines
programmed with the sole purpose of ending, precisely, the lives of those who will give rise to the Resistance in the future and therefore to the possible
defeat of the machines, led by the artificial intelligence Skynet, an overpowered and
destructive version of GPT, in simple terms.
Scherzi a parte, Nacon’s game will be a fully-fledged open world, which will be available in early access in October 2024, according to what has been announced, and then distributed across the console universe, including of course the PlayStation 5, whose graphics engine promises fireworks. The bleak future outlined by the developers, with resources to recover in order to survive another day without ending up riddled with fatal shots and the ruthless lasers of sentry drones, really seems compelling.
The storyline written for the game is
original and, as far as has been understood so far, it does not take into
account the timeline endorsed by the latest film Dark Fate, but rather the classic one,
with John Connor as an adult and leader of the rebels: one will be able to play a very
vast single-player campaign; however, a cooperative mode is also planned, which
will delight those who have always wanted to cover a companion’s back by
punching holes in machines and assassin robots.
Interesting is the possibility
of managing one, or perhaps more, rebel bases, defending them from enemy attacks
and working with companions (up to three human players at the current stage of development) to ensure resources for the rebels and for those who with blood and the last shreds of humanity stoically resist against the overwhelming, cold and methodical power of the machines designed to exterminate them all.
Pollice su, at least so far, to quote the iconic
ending of Terminator 2: the new Judgment
Day is returning to our home screens.
