Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac’s Challenge

by The Games Market RedazioneAugust 31, 2026

After turning Spider-Man into one of the most compelling protagonists in recent Marvel video game history, Insomniac Games decided to change direction. Instead of the webs of Peter Parker and Miles Morales comes one of the most tormented and recognizable characters in the Marvel universe: Wolverine.

Announced in 2021 and kept shrouded in mystery for years, Marvel’s Wolverine is finally ready to step out of the shadows. The game will arrive on PlayStation 5 on 15 September 2026, offering a single-player adventure that, while retaining some of the hallmark traits of Insomniac productions, will take a noticeably different path from the one followed with Spider-Man.

The difference does not concern only the protagonist. Insomniac chose to abandon the open world structure in order to focus on a more linear, narrative experience, built around Logan and his past. A decision that could be essential in giving the project its own identity.

Logan is not Spider-Man

The comparison with Marvel’s Spider-Man will be inevitable, but precisely for this reason it is important to make clear from the outset that Marvel’s Wolverine does not want to be Spider-Man with a different protagonist.

The adventure will be predominantly linear and will not offer a gigantic open world map to freely traverse. This choice allows Insomniac to focus the pacing more on the narrative experience and the combat, accompanying Logan through a story that will touch on various locations.

These will include Canada, Tokyo, and Madripoor, three deeply different settings that will allow the game to alternate between natural landscapes, metropolises, and territories marked by crime and chaos.

It is an interesting premise above all because Wolverine is a character who, more than Spider-Man, lends himself to a story built around his own past. Logan does not need a city full of side activities to be interesting: his relationship with his own identity, with memory, and with the very nature of his power already offers enough material to build a personal journey.

A more brutal fight

The most obvious change naturally concerns the combat system.

Spider-Man fights by using speed, mobility, and the environment. Wolverine does exactly the opposite: he takes on opponents at close range, absorbs hits, and keeps fighting thanks to his regenerative ability.

Insomniac has therefore built a system that focuses more on aggression. Logan will be able to use his mutant powers, dodge, parry, and counterattack, alternating direct attacks with special moves. Regeneration will not be merely a narrative feature, but an integral part of the gameplay, helping define the way the player approaches fights.

To this will be added a mechanic tied to Logan's rage, designed to reward a particularly aggressive approach. Combat will therefore be a central component of the experience, but not the only one: Insomniac has in fact emphasized the importance of exploration and the narrative component.

The result should be a game that is decidedly more physical than Marvel’s Spider-Man, in which the feeling of being Wolverine will have to come mainly from the way you move and fight.

A story built around Logan

At the center of the new adventure will be James “Logan” Howlett, once again grappling with his own past.

Marvel’s Wolverine will not be a direct adaptation of a specific comic book story, but an original reinterpretation of the character. Insomniac therefore has the opportunity to use recognizable elements of Wolverine’s mythology without necessarily being tied to a single version of the character.

The story will lead Logan to confront his own past and a series of characters from the X-Men universe. Among the confirmed appearances is Jean Grey, while the protagonist’s journey will put him in contact with several figures connected to his history.

The choice to focus on Logan’s identity could also allow Insomniac to show a side of the character rarely explored in video games with the same depth. Wolverine is in fact much more than the indestructible mutant who fights with three claws per hand: he is a character marked by memory loss, guilt, and the constant conflict between his human nature and his more animalistic one.

It is precisely these aspects that can turn the game into something more than just a simple sequence of battles.

The world of the X-Men

Another of the big curiosities concerns the way Insomniac will use the Marvel universe.

After building its own version of New York and the Spider-Man universe, the studio seems intent on doing something similar with Wolverine. The game will in fact introduce an original version of the X-Men world, without limiting itself to using the character as an isolated element.

The various settings will play an important role in this regard. Canada represents the most direct link to Logan's story, while Tokyo and Madripoor will make it possible to progressively expand the adventure's context.

Madripoor, in particular, is a location closely tied to the comic-book history of the X-Men and Wolverine. Bringing it into the project means offering fans a recognizable reference, but also giving Insomniac a setting very different from those explored in its previous works.

The game therefore seems to want to build a broader Marvel universe, in which Wolverine can have his own identity without necessarily constantly relying on Spider-Man.

A different project for Insomniac

This is probably the most interesting point of the entire project.

Insomniac achieved enormous success with Marvel’s Spider-Man, but that very success could have turned into a cage. Repeating the same formula with a different character would have been the easiest choice.

The studio instead opted for a different structure, a protagonist with completely opposite characteristics, and a more adult tone.

The choice to forgo open world is particularly significant. It does not necessarily mean having a smaller game: it means being able to better control pacing, atmosphere, and progression, building the adventure around Logan’s story rather than around a map to fill.

Combat will also have to play its part. Wolverine must be immediately distinguishable from Spider-Man not only in appearance, but in the way the player perceives the character.

It is a challenge that is anything but simple.

The most important test

Marvel’s Wolverine arrives after years of waiting and with inevitably very high expectations. On one hand there is the weight of a character who needs no introduction; on the other there is a studio that has already proven it knows how to turn Marvel heroes into convincing video game protagonists.

The risk, however, is precisely that of being judged through the yardstick of Spider-Man.

To truly succeed, Wolverine will have to prove he can live by his own formula. It will have to be more physical, more personal, and probably also darker, without simply turning into a more violent superhero experience.

The premises seem to indicate a clear direction: a more focused single-player adventure, built around Logan's story and a combat system that places greater emphasis on the character's physicality.

The verdict will arrive on 15 September 2026, when Marvel’s Wolverine debuts exclusively on PlayStation 5.

After proving they know how to tell Spider-Man’s story, Insomniac will now have to prove they know how to tell Wolverine’s story. And this time, simply changing the costume won’t be enough.
