Dragon Age The Veilguard

by Simon LaroccaSeptember 17, 2024

La palm of “prototype of the modern role-playing video game” of the twenty-first century is notoriously assigned to Skyrim, the latest chapter released in chronological order as part of the Elder Scrolls saga, as we all know.
However, just before the unstoppable rise of Bethesda’s masterpiece, it was another title that laid the foundations for the new direction of Western-style RPGs. I’m obviously talking about Dragon Age, which with its Origins in 2009 shocked the multitude of fantasy fans with its combat system and a magnificent attention to the story and dialogues of the main characters.
Quince years later, more precisely on October 31, 2024, according to the now confirmed rumors from multiple sources, Dragon Age will arrive on Ps5 and Xbox Series with its fourth innovative installment, with the name Veilguard already suggesting the summoning of a legendary warrior ready to fight Evil, and in the elven quiver, besides arrows, it will bring a whole series of innovations that are already sparking discussion everywhere among fans of both the old and new guard.
To tell the truth, as a true gamer of the Eighties, the reminiscences suggested to me by the new incarnation of the fantasy saga are not tied to Skyrim, but to a game placed further back in time and that I consider the adopted father of Dragon Age, namely that Baldur’s Gate that at the time put everyone in agreement on how one develops and produces a role-playing game.
Veilguard relies on a visual style less dark and realistic, unlike its three predecessors, and with the adoption of graphics more similar to a modern cartoon seems to want take a very specific direction, modernizing itself and shedding many of the technical characteristics, but not only those, that characterized the previous games.
Will it be enough to threaten the throne where Bethesda’s Dragon Blood sits?
This remains to be seen, but objectively the premises are not bad: a vast world to explore with the hub for players that is complete and functional, where we can have at hand every type of information (minimaps, inventory, weapons, bestiary, etc.) that may be useful for our main quest.
Moreover, the possibility of entering into romantic relationships, choosing to see nudity without filters according to our own personal taste, enormously expands the narrative component designed specifically for the characterization of the protagonist and his party: as they say in romantic films, in the end you look for love everywhere, but it has always been right under your nose!

Rigorously single-player as per tradition, Dragon Age: The Veilguard transports us to a land devastated by the threat of the Dread Wolf and his preparations to destroy the Veil and sweep across the world, putting it to sword and fire.
Nei panni di Rook, il protagonista, saremo affiancati da un gruppo di eroi variegati e molto diversi tra loro per un obiettivo comune. Which one? The salvation of the world, what a question!
Uno dei companions that impressed me the most, both for design and combat abilities, is Lucanis Dellamorte, a name that is a destiny given that he belongs to the assassin class and will probably become many people's favorite character, as well as mine: no need for tarot cards to guess it, magic cards, among other things, also present in this chapter in the function of recap of the saga’s previous chapters at the beginning of the game.
At this point all we can do is wait, our fingers are itching and when we strike blows the day of release will be a glorious day: the Dragon Age is about to return to our consoles.
