Non would it be enough the most charismatic of protagonists, nor the most refined gameplay to transform a banal game into a jewel on screen: what a title really needs to stand out is an idea.
Parlo di ideas with a capital I and that take shape naturally, sparks of creativity that, as if by magic, go on to involve every department, from the visual one to the sound package, unfolding like a well-crafted plot capable of enchanting. And entertaining, above all, if it’s a legendary series like Super Monkey Ball!
Come the title itself says, we will be dealing with a monkey and a ball: the two elements are not only complementary, but represent fifty percent of the gameplay.
The other is constituted by its original peculiarity, namely tilting the game world so that the monkey inside the sphere moves along the floor, which becomes increasingly labyrinthine and complex as you advance through the levels, with the objective being the finish line that will mark the success of AiAi's adventure. This is in fact the name of the protagonist, later joined by many supporting characters and friends.
The latest incarnation of a saga that, in its early days, was born under the Sega banner in 2001, is about to return to Nintendo Switch with the highly prophetic and thunderous title of Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble.
Bananas, in fact, are a fundamental component of a monkey's life; just think of Kong's greed, another iconic character from Nintendo's stable.
Nel caso di Super Monkey Ball, riuscire a raccoglierle durante il percorso che si snoda attraverso levels that we dare not describe in any other way than totally insane, becomes more essential than ever, since the only fruit of love, as someone sang long ago, is in fact the currency used to obtain various types of bonuses and the much-coveted extra lives with which to try and try again to get past that damnably difficult level.
In unsuspecting times, extra lives were called "cannoncini" and if you belong to the Eighties like the one writing, then you know very well what we are talking about.
Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble will be peeled, or rather it has been announced for a release on June 25, 2024, of course a Switch exclusive that Nintendo, as per the Kyoto company’s tradition, will do everything it can to keep very, very close to its chest.
Forse SMBBR was never a top-tier title like those starring mustached plumbers, princesses, and silent heroes in search of Triforces or adorable pink creatures hungry for everything that moves and doesn’t, but over time AiAi has managed to carve out a clear and very solid place within the legion of video games bearing the Big N label: a huge point in its favor is also the existence of a series of arcade cabinets distributed in game halls, especially Japanese ones but until a decade ago even found in certain Italian locations, where the handling of the tilting board to make AiAi’s sphere move is provided by an unmistakable peripheral shaped like a… Well, yes, a banana.
But beyond all that, the next Super Monkey Ball on Switch promises sparks to fly: local multiplayer for up to four players simultaneously on the comfort of your own couch and competitions to the very last banana peel using online play, competing with up to sixteen participants!
And even the single-player campaign, with more than two hundred levels if we go by what Nintendo announced in recent months, seems to have its own appeal: Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble is already in better shape than ever before even before its release!
