Lustrous blades and graceful movements, unwavering determination in her gaze and blind faith in her mission: this is how Eve, the elegant and deadly protagonist of Stellar Blade, presents herself to the public, the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 title that will see the light of day at the end of April 2024, according to the official information released by Sony, the game’s producer.
Of this electrifying title, there has been a lot of talk for quite some time, both because it is a PlayStation exclusive that promises to set new standards in the fertile video game landscape of the next-generation action RPG genre, and because the reins of this project are firmly in the hands of Shift Up, an enigmatic name behind which stands Kim Hung Tae, a Korean developer who with Stellar Blade could really leap off the screen, as they say of great movie actors.
And cinematic as the plot underlying the game seems to be, the setting is very classic, with humanity dominated by an alien race called the Naytiba, whose bases on Earth form the epicenter of their power and the place from which their armies depart to maintain control over what remains: ruins and suffering. The few survivors, in fact, have taken refuge in the Colony, a sort of space base far from the planet they were forced to abandon.
Eve and her team have a single mission when they arrive on the dying planet: to defeat the aliens once and for all and return, if possible, the Earth to those who have always lived on it as the only truly possible home.
The developers promise a fast-paced, action-based game, with controls and special moves to learn quickly in order to withstand the game’s demanding bosses: the system of parries, dodges, and attacks seems to be set up, as in the best arcade tradition, in pursuit of the perfect timing needed to counterattack and destroy your enemies. From the first images, Stellar Blade immediately reminded me of Bayonetta, another title that managed to lay a milestone in the action genre with a third-person perspective, just as happened in the late 90s when it was Dante, in Devil May Cry, who set the standard among the mass of similar video games.
The lighting effects and the acrobatics
of the beautiful Eve are nothing short of formidable, certainly thanks to the
graphical power of the console, which is not spared for even a moment,
fully pushed, as is right after quite a few years since its
troubled release, to deliver a visual and gameplay experience unlike anything
seen in years.
The post-apocalyptic Earth of Stellar Blade is a feast for the eyes, the graphic details are rendered with impressive vividness and, moreover, a delightful element that I consider an added value, it seems that the plot will not be as linear as the opening suggests, thus guaranteeing plot twists and narrative turns that will certainly increase the appeal of the title itself.
Fundamental will be the accuracy
with which Eve responds to our commands entered via the joypad: the greater
the precision and timing, the greater our fun will be,
because in this type of game the boss “Frustration” is always around the corner
and when it arrives, unfortunately, it is not so easy to defeat.
Will our Eve manage to get the better of him too?
To this question we will
be able to answer only after April 26, 2024, when the new futuristic PlayStation heroine
will land on Earth, and in our homes, to carry out her
most important mission.
