Halo: Campaign Evolved brings Master Chief back to Alpha Halo, but for the first time on PlayStation
by The Games Market RedazioneJune 22, 2026
There are few video games that can boast an impact comparable to that of Halo: Combat Evolved. When it debuted in November 2001 alongside the first Xbox, Bungie's masterpiece did not merely become the symbol of Microsoft's new console: it redefined the very concept of the first-person shooter on consoles, helping to change the video game landscape forever.
Twenty-five years after that debut, Xbox Game Studios and Halo Studios have announced Halo: Campaign Evolved, a complete reconstruction of the original adventure that promises to take players back to Alpha Halo through a modern reinterpretation of the campaign that gave rise to one of the most iconic sagas in the history of the medium.
The new title will arrive on July 28, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5, marking a historic moment not only for the series, but for the entire video game industry.
A complete remake, not a simple remaster
Halo: Campaign Evolved should not be confused with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, the remastered edition released in 2011. The project developed by Halo Studios is in fact a remake built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5, with environments, models, animations, and cinematics completely rebuilt.

The stated goal of the team is to preserve the identity of the original work while adapting it to contemporary standards, while at the same time offering a new point of entry for those who have never had the chance to discover the origins of the saga.
The campaign will revisit Master Chief’s famous adventure on the mysterious Halo ring, but it will also include numerous gameplay innovations. Confirmed features include the introduction of sprinting (an element that has sparked no small amount of criticism from hardcore fans), new vehicles and weapons from later installments in the series, the ability to board enemy vehicles, destructible vehicles, and a major overhaul of both artificial intelligence and the structure of combat encounters.
The game will also support online co-op for up to four players, the return of local split-screen for two users, and full cross-play across all platforms.
Operation: METEORITE expands the original story
Among the most interesting additions is Operation: METEORITE, a mini-campaign made up of three brand-new missions set one year before the events of Combat Evolved.
The expansion will tell a secret mission involving Master Chief and Sergeant Avery Johnson during a raid against the Covenant forces. Although Halo Studios has kept the plot details tightly under wraps, the new content aims to delve deeper into the narrative context preceding the discovery of the first Halo ring, offering new lore elements to longtime fans of the saga.
A once unthinkable event until a few years ago: Halo arrives on PlayStation
If the return of the original campaign is already significant news in itself, the real element destined to make history is another: Halo will officially arrive on PlayStation 5 as well.
For over two decades, the franchise has been the very symbol of the Xbox ecosystem, one of the most representative exclusives of Microsoft’s identity. Seeing Master Chief appear on a Sony console would have been unthinkable until just a few years ago.

The arrival of Halo: Campaign Evolved on PlayStation therefore represents one of the most evident manifestations of the new multiplatform strategy adopted by Microsoft Gaming in recent years.
Commenting on the choice, Halo Studios Community Director Brian Jarrard explained that the goal is to allow an ever-increasing number of players to experience and share the Halo experience regardless of the platform used. This is a vision also shared by the development team, which considers the expansion of the community one of the key elements for the future of the series.
For millions of PlayStation users, this will be the first opportunity to discover directly the chapter that gave rise to the entire narrative universe of Halo, without going through collections or later conversions.
From a symbolic point of view, the release on PS5 probably represents the most significant change in the history of the series since the transition from Bungie to 343 Industries, now Halo Studios.
Collector's Edition: a celebration for longtime fans
On the occasion of the launch, Xbox Game Studios also announced a physical Collector's Edition designed for collectors and long-time fans of the saga.
The edition will include a physical copy of the game, an exclusive SteelBook, a Master Chief statue about thirty centimeters tall, a LED replica of Cortana’s chip, 3 concept art prints, and a physical manual designed to follow the aesthetic of the one from Combat Evolved. These contents are joined by several digital bonuses, including a voucher for the upgrade to the Premium Edition, early access up to five days before the official release, and a series of exclusive cosmetic items.
Among these are the Foundry Armory Pack, the historic Mark V armor inspired by the 2001 design, a classic version of the Assault Rifle, and several customizations belonging to the Gilded Onyx line.
This is a package clearly designed to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the saga and the return to the franchise's roots.
A new beginning for the legend
Halo: Campaign Evolved presents itself simultaneously as a tribute to the past and as a statement of intent for the future of the series.
On one hand there is the desire to preserve and enhance one of the most influential video games ever; on the other, there emerges the will to expand Halo’s audience through a multiplatform strategy that until a few years ago would have seemed impossible.
For those who experienced the debut of the original in 2001, this is the chance to return to the first Halo ring in a completely renewed form. For millions of PlayStation players, however, it will finally be time to discover why Master Chief has become one of the most important icons in the history of video games.
