Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, the endless duel between Cloud and Sephiroth returns on Switch 2!
by Simon Larocca·January 14, 2026
Esistono videogiochi, videogiochi belli e videogiochi molto ma molto belli. Then there are those that need no introduction, shrouded in an aura of legend as blinding as the Mako produced by Shinra, whose name translated into Italian, “final fantasy,” is synonymous with beauty, emotions, and epicness at the highest level of art. Because in this case, we must speak of art.
Final Fantasy VII has represented, for nearly thirty years, for countless RPG fans and beyond, the highest peak that the video game landscape has managed to reach in its history: splendidly characterized characters, a complex and profound story that strikes the chords of the human soul, and the opposition (and unbreakable bond) between the two main characters, Cloud and Sephiroth, which goes far beyond the mere physical clash of sword blows and devastating techno-magical skills.
Del suo remake, released in 2020 and part of a substantial trilogy that will rewrite, it seems, some of the most effective and powerful narrative paths ever created in an RPG, much has already been said, but not enough about Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade: technically it presented itself as the PS5 version of the main game (released the year before only on PS4), however the introduction of a DLC dedicated to the cute and deadly ninja of the party, that Yuffie who took a lot of effort to unlock in the iconic 1997 title, makes Intergrade a much more interesting product than it might seem.
E indeed, its story is not over yet, as Tetsuya Nomura would say, curator of the new trilogy and already an award-winning author for the various Xenoblade Chronicles, the wonderful Parasite Eve and, of course, the Square-Enix-disney saga of Kingdom Hearts: on January 22, 2026, just around the corner, Switch 2 will bring back Intergrade with all its follow-up extras, special content and yes, also INTERmission with Yuffie Kisaragi.
Per those who still don’t know Final Fantasy VII and who would deserve a permanent place on the chickpeas in the cafeteria in front of a looped screening of The Battleship Potemkin, we’re talking about a sweeping adventure in which Cloud Strife, a blond mercenary in the service of the Avalanche organization devoted to eco-terrorism and the protection of Midgar, faces the evil megacorporation Shinra together with Tifa, Barrett, and a series of unforgettable characters, for character design, background, and development throughout the story, so engaging that you will find yourselves rooting for them in the showdown against the villain par excellence, Sephiroth, the perfect Soldier, unbeatable, the one-winged angel.
Rereading the battles with a skillful mix of strategy and real-time action, Intergrade brings fans of the original game back to the lands of Midgard, with the graphical upgrade that, of course, could only have been dreamed of in the late Nineties, reuniting old and new acquaintances for a storyline that will satisfy the old guard but, as you will discover only by playing, also planting here and there the seeds of something absolutely new and unpredictable.
Al di là di every purely technical consideration about the porting from consoles like PS5 and XSeries, which run on standards obviously higher than Nintendo's new arrival, one must consider the excellent work that was done, demonstrated by the gameplay videos with Cloud's acrobatics and his iconic broadsword: among the included special contents we will have many in-game obtainable items, such as the Midgar bracelet or the materia to summon the mythical Cactuar, but what will make the difference, I am sure, will once again be the possibility of returning to play as the rebellious heroes of Avalanche, led by Cloud and Tifa, who between a drink at the Seventh Heaven and a romantic ride on the Ferris wheel, will move us as they did the first time… And Aerith too.
She must never be forgotten.
