EA Sports FC 24: revolution or return to the roots
by Simon Larocca·October 18, 2023
The kick-off is a serious matter.
È il momento in cui sfidi il tuo avversario guardandolo dritto negli occhi: whether you decide to touch the ball with the tip of your foot, passing it to your teammate, or strike it hard to release the tension, this is where your epic ninety-minute battle begins.
Who knows if the programmers at EA Sports imagined the start of development like this when they chose to bring to life the latest chapter in the successful series of football simulations that went by the name of FIFA. “Went by,” yes, because this year things have changed: following the trend launched by their historic rival, that Pro Evolution Soccer transformed into eFootball, FIFA is rebranding itself as the more technical “EA Sports FC 24.”

This is because the FIFA federation will no longer have anything to do with EA Sports’ gem, since the two giants have officially parted ways forever after nearly three decades of partnership.
The call to online competitions that have been hugely popular for years now among fans of the new millennium of video games is clear: the desire to evolve and enter the Esports market with even greater force, long almost exclusively the domain of first-person shooters and team-based strategy games, speaks volumes about the new direction EA intends to take.
In the beginning, at the end of the nineties to be clear, there were two perfectly defined factions: those who loved accurate simulations filled the ranks of the "pessari," in other words the supporters of PES, while those who preferred immediacy and less technical rigor pointed their joypads, and their money, toward FIFA, in all its incarnations. Blow by blow, the two brands have challenged each other for decades.
Until the day before yesterday, the roles were reversed. PES had lost the crown of realism, handing it over to its rival. Since eFootball made its debut, the improvements to the old Pro Evolution Soccer have been slow but steady, and perhaps that is why Fifa24, or rather EA Sports Fc 24 (I challenge anyone to call it that from now until the next few years!) has decided to take action.
Al beyond the remarkable graphical evolutions that faithfully reflect their real-life counterparts and their movements, the great challenge to embrace is always and only one: knowing how to transfer onto a screen everything that makes a football match unique in its kind: strategies, tactics to adjust and modify in real time, player movements, and the possibility of shaping our team exactly as we want.
This means eliminating as much as possible the annoying and frustrating feeling of "running on pre-set tracks" on the field, for example, or what has always made Fifa a more arcade than simulation game: I am clearly talking about Sprinting, and about how some superstar players are impossible to catch and mark, which has always made the planned moves of strategy gurus useless, a branch, if you’ll allow me, very important and widespread among fans of football games.
As always, it is the video game players who will decide which of the two quintessential football brands will prevail over the other.
La history of Fifa teaches us that it is in simplicity and immediate gameplay, but not cheap, that the series has had its best chapters, such as Fifa99, long ago, but close to the heart of every devoted player.
Not to mention the 96 edition, when isometric visuals still ruled our cathode-ray tube televisions.
Puck to center ice, it’s your turn now.
7
Pro
A brand that has always been synonymous with quality and attention to the multitude of gaming options offered
The implementation of women’s football significantly improves the gameplay experience, offering more realistic gameplay
Contro
The series is shifting more and more toward an arcade side that doesn’t suit it
The game mechanics are substantially unchanged, and the 'pick up the ball and run down the wing' effect persists to this day

Ma come direbbe Doc di Ritorno al Futuro, non ci sarebbe presente se non si guardasse al passato con rispetto e ammirazione, ed è il Simon bambino di più di trent’anni fa, anno più anno meno.
