Switch 2 Horizons of Glory

by Simon LaroccaMarch 5, 2024

Before Nintendo introduced its latest console to the world, in March 2017, the doubts of industry insiders and fans, long devoted to the Big N, were many.
Innanzitutto it was a hybrid machine, that is, with the possibility of being used within the walls of home, seated in complete comfort on our sofa, or removed from its dock (with the characteristic ‘clack’, an onomatopoeia that has become iconic over the years), transforming it into a true portable console. Switching, as the name itself says, at will from one mode to another depending on the player’s tastes.
Would old-school players have liked it? Would it have appealed to the new generations, those who grew up on bread and Fortnite, so to speak? The answer was not long in coming, and it did so in the best and most effective way of all. Sales.
Nintendo Switch can be considered the legitimate daughter of the marriage between the fun taken to the nth degree unleashed by the Wii and the sense of innovation that the Wii U brought to a stagnant kingdom of videogame monotony in recent years, made up of repetitive soulslikes and the loss of the concept of Game as Nintendo has always understood it.
Dal 2017, a lot of water has passed under the bridge, and it’s time to renew the vows: the rumors circulating about an imminent Switch 2 have been bouncing around for some time now, the hype is growing more and more every day, as are the speculations regarding the exclusives and the features that will accompany its launch: perhaps the news that has left users salivating uncontrollably, see also under the entry can’t-wait-to-get-our-hands-on-it, is the one concerning the performance it will boast: there is even talk of a comparison with the power of the PlayStation 5 or XBOX X, famously the absolute benchmark for next-generation consoles!
Will it be true glory, or not? The question we all ask ourselves, however, is not just this.
The Kyoto dream machine has always accustomed us to products that combined quality and playful performance, a blend of fun and immediacy capable of embracing all types of gamers, from hardcore players to those who pick up the joypad during birthday parties or when getting together with friends for an evening that is a little different from the others, the so-called casual gamers.
With the first Switch, the Big N proved it could keep up with its competitors, entertainment systems that focused above all on a top-notch graphics department, will it be the same with the next console? The rumors are many and it is difficult to line them up without asking where fantasy ends and reality begins, as in the best dystopian novels.
Another hot topic that keeps coming up is the presence or absence of a camera, a feature inexplicably missing from the current Switch, if we consider the proliferation of streamers and Twitch users engaged in recording every minute of their on-screen exploits.
Much speculation, then, but still few certainties for what, in Nintendo’s intentions, should be the cornerstone on which to build the near future: an achievable goal for those who have made, and continue to make, Video Games history. I am convinced that surprises are just around the corner, and all we have to do is reach out, at the moment when Switch 2, or whatever official name it will be given, makes an appearance, winking at us playfully.
Making a clack, of course.
