Limited Edition

by Simon LaroccaNovember 7, 2023

The varied world of collecting is accessible to anyone who has a good dose of passion and a willingness to get involved, searching for rare objects that are difficult to find on the online sales sites that we have all been using for years, more or less daily.
Talking about Limited Edition, therefore, brings with it important concepts, so indispensable that on social media and specialized platforms they could be preceded by the famous hashtags: rare, exclusive and limited.
Ogni video game released includes a standard version, depending on the format in which publishers decide to bring it to market: whether digital, physical, or released in both forms, the so-called Standard will be the one available to all users: quite different is the case for the game’s Limited Editions, which in turn are divided into “Day One” editions, available only on the day of release and usually preceded by a strong pre-order campaign, and those with a higher value and eagerly sought after by collectors: the Collector’s Editions, indeed.
The collector’s editions stand out clearly from the others for their content, but also for the packaging itself, with packaging themed according to the genre and the main characters of the title, and which differs completely from the standard version: inside, accessories are usually included that the other versions do not have, such as illustrated maps by famous artists, for example, or CDs with the game’s soundtrack, commemorative postcards, and so on.
As of today, Nintendo is certainly one of the companies that focuses its market on collector’s editions, thanks to the decade-long strength of the multitude of licenses it has: the limited edition of Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu, for example, a remake of the legendary Pokémon Yellow, included, in addition to the themed colors of the Joy-Con, even a Poké Ball Plus, with a price that even today ranges from 500 euros up to pieces valued at nearly 1,000 euros.
Being special editions, their number is limited and there is never a reprint of the titles in this format: as collectors know well, once the copies are sold out, they will never be offered again and this, of course, increases their market value in inverse proportion to the number available: the fewer there are, the higher their economic value will be.
Moreover, the condition in which they are preserved constitutes another fundamental element, as boxed and mint-condition pieces will further increase their valuation.
The rise of online platforms that host communities of collectors, such as The Games Market here for example, has provided the world with a fundamental tool to connect collectors from every part of the globe, and in doing so, consequently, their precious collections are also made available to industry professionals, so that they can compare them and, why not, reach agreements for the purchase and sale of items that until the day before were practically impossible to find.
This is because knowing how to move quickly and with the right amount of information needed to make your way through the vast world of collecting can make all the difference; for this very reason, The Games Market becomes a useful place and tool for those who want to take their first steps or who already own large and valuable collections.
