Once Upon a Time
Space Armada, the attack of the clone... of a classic!
by Simon Larocca·January 29, 2026
E it does not matter at all that Space Armada is, in fact, a clone of the legendary Space Invaders: 1981 marked its official release and one of its positive consequences, beyond making us fiddle like crazy even today in pursuit of aliens, was to make the Mattel console better known, which also landed here, albeit with timid little steps.
Why shy? We’re talking about a 1979 machine sold across the entire United States and which even arrived in Italy three years later, while we were preparing to win the World Cup instead of defending the Earth from alien invasions. And yet, Space Armada managed to carve out its niche of enthusiasts, not only for its technical specifications capable of rivaling Atari, but also by riding the wake left by the thrusters of titles like this one, undoubtedly noteworthy.
Space Armada sees us at the helm of a spaceship, the last bastion against the hordes of aliens arriving on the planet: the opposing formation features four rows, each made up of a race different from the others in shape and color, which will move downward, getting closer and closer to our avatar. We will have just one type of shot at our disposal, spaced by a reload moment between one shot and the next, with the ability to move only horizontally, from right to left and vice versa. The strategic component of what is, in the end, a fixed-screen shooter, relies on a trio of elements that you will have to take into account, namely three shields that stand between the spacecraft and the alien invasion, which will weaken every time they are hit by the enemies (or by us if we are not careful), until their inevitable destruction. After a few levels, things will get even more serious, when rows of invisible enemies (I’m not kidding) take the field, to be brought down with Pegasus’s seventh sense, not to mention an enemy upgrade that will allow their shots to generate deadly explosions once they hit the bottom of the screen!
A livello di gameplay, the biggest flaw of Space Armada is also what made it amusingly famous among fans: the hitbox, that is, the area around an object, a character or in this case a spaceship that can be hit, is nothing short of inaccurate: often we will be certain that we are being hit and yet we will get away with it, which dangerously undermines the gaming experience, due to technical limitations or programming carelessness, a shame.
Space Armada is the perfect reflection of a period marked by major revolutions in the industry, the creative fertile ground that in the years to come would give rise to the golden age of arcades.

Pro
Engaging and fun shooter, a clone of a classic that forms the foundation of the genre, a must for every player who considers themselves such
The idea of making the aliens so large, recognizable, and in different colors gives them a certain something we might call “personality,” and considering the year, that is by no means trivial
The introduction of some variations from the original Space Invaders justifies its longevity
Contro
The handling of collisions between enemy shots and the surface of our spaceship is almost comical; although this issue is not systematic, it is still very present during the game.
It remains a full-fledged clone of Space Invaders; the originality prize will not go to Intellivision, that’s for sure.
