Rule of Rose: media case and collector's icon

by The Games Market RedazioneJuly 1, 2026

There are video games that are remembered for their commercial success, others for the innovation they brought to the industry. Rule of Rose, released in 2006, is instead one of those very rare cases in which notoriety, controversy, and collecting have intertwined to make it one of the most fascinating titles in the entire PlayStation 2 library.

Developed by Punchline, a small Japanese studio, Rule of Rose is now considered a cult psychological survival horror game. At the time of its release, however, its artistic qualities were pushed almost into the background, overshadowed by a media controversy that would forever mark the game's commercial fate.

A psychological horror outside the box

Released in Japan by Sony Computer Entertainment in early 2006 and then brought to North America by Atlus in September and to Europe by 505 Games in November, Rule of Rose arrived on the market exclusively for PlayStation 2.

The launch took place during a particularly difficult period: PlayStation 2 was now giving way to the new generation, with the arrival of PlayStation 3. This circumstance helped limit its spread, especially in Europe.

Narratively, Rule of Rose stood apart from almost all horror games of the time. The protagonist Jennifer finds herself trapped in a disturbing orphanage dominated by the Aristocratic Club, a society made up exclusively of children. More than on monsters, the game builds its tension around dynamics of psychological abuse, marginalization, guilt, and the loss of innocence.

The entire narrative is strongly symbolic and draws on European Gothic literature, traditional fairy tales, and child psychology, giving rise to a deliberately ambiguous story that is still analyzed today by fans of the genre.

An ambitious development

Punchline was a small studio, but it tried to make a horror game very different from the competition of the time. The goal was not to scare through monsters and jump scares, but to create a constant sense of unease.

One of the most original elements was Brown, the dog who accompanies Jennifer throughout the adventure. Rather than relying on intrusive indicators or maps, the developers decided to use the animal's sense of smell as the exploration system, a solution that further strengthened immersion.

More controversial, however, was the combat system. Jennifer is intentionally fragile, slow, and ineffective in fights: a narrative choice consistent with the character, but one that many reviewers interpreted as a technical limitation, contributing to the mixed reviews received at launch.

The controversy that changed its fate

The fame of Rule of Rose is mainly tied to the controversies that accompanied its release in 2006. Some European media described the game as a work characterized by extreme violence and sexual content involving minors, accusations that helped fuel a heated political debate in several countries.

Many of these reconstructions, however, were based on incomplete information or on incorrect interpretations of trailers and promotional material, in some cases even describing scenes that do not appear in the final version of the game.

In Italy, the media uproar pushed the distributor to stop marketing the title, a circumstance that over time fueled the belief, still widespread today, that Rule of Rose had been "banned" by law. In reality, no government measure was ever issued to prohibit its sale.

In the United Kingdom, however, the British Board of Film Classification regularly upheld the game's classification, specifying that many of the accusations circulating in the press were not borne out by the actual content.

Over the years, this episode has become one of the most significant examples of how media narratives can influence public perception of a work, regardless of its actual content.

The various PAL versions: which are the most sought-after?

From a collecting perspective, Rule of Rose is now one of the emblematic titles in the European PlayStation 2 library. Its limited distribution and the growing fame it has gained over the years have progressively increased the value of all PAL editions, albeit with some differences.

The PAL UK version is generally the most sought after on the international market. Being completely in English and highly appreciated by English-speaking collectors, it often fetches the highest prices, especially if complete with the original manual and in excellent condition.

The Italian PAL version occupies a special place. Its short time on the market, due to the suspension of distribution following the controversy, has significantly limited its availability. Although it is not the rarest overall, it is one of the editions most sought after by Italian collectors and in recent years has seen a steady increase in valuations.

Even the French, Spanish and German editions are highly appreciated. The Spanish version, in particular, benefits from a rather limited distribution and in recent years has attracted growing interest from European collectors. The value differences between these editions depend mainly on demand in their respective markets and on the condition of the copies.

As is the case for many high-end PlayStation 2 titles, the presence of the original intact case, the manual, the absence of scratches on the disc, and, above all, the original seal for never-opened copies are determining factors in the monetary valuation.

Grading and the protection of an important item

In recent years, the retrogaming market has also seen a growing spread of grading, that is, the professional certification of the condition of preservation of a video game.

In the case of Rule of Rose, grading makes sense especially for factory sealed copies or for complete specimens in exceptional condition. In addition to certifying authenticity and preservation, a rating issued by a recognized body offers greater guarantees to both collectors and potential buyers, helping to strengthen the value of the item over time.

For an already opened copy with normal signs of use, the cost of certification is unlikely to be recouped. The situation is different for sealed copies: considering the prices reached by the title and the steady international demand, grading can be a sensible choice both for preservation and from an investment perspective.

A symbol of video game history

Nearly twenty years after its release, Rule of Rose continues to hold a special place in the history of the medium. Not only because of the quality of its storytelling or its artistic value, but because it stands as one of the most emblematic cases of how public debate can influence the commercial fate of a video game.

Paradoxically, that very limited distribution, which undermined its initial success, helped make it one of the most sought-after pieces in PlayStation 2 collecting. Today, owning a complete copy of Rule of Rose means preserving not only a rare psychological survival horror, but also a testament to a period when video games were still trying to establish themselves as an adult art form, often misunderstood by those observing them from the outside.
