Diablo III, the Eternal Battle Between Heaven and Hell

by Simon LaroccaOctober 21, 2025

In the middle of the journey of our life, I found myself in a dark forest.
Dante Alighieri described his arrival at the gates of the Underworld this way; we all studied it at school. However, in those years, after closing the book of epic poetry, the demons I faced on the screen of my fabulous Pentium 75 were quite different: a CD-ROM as the coin offered to Charon, the mouse that became a sword and shield, and that is how I descended downward, ever downward, into dusty crypts and gloomy, menacing rooms. Diablo gave me hours and hours of fun, and that was only the beginning.
The years passed, amid more or less successful clones and a spectacular official sequel, but the trilogy devoted to the tragedy of Tristram and the abyss that started it all found completion only in 2012, with Diablo III, also by Blizzard. And it was immediately a triumph of clangs emitted by clashing swords, bloodstained axes and… fists steeped in ki.
The third chapter begins exactly twenty years after the appearance of the passage beneath the city’s famous monastery, a link between the world of humans and the countless dungeons that guarded access to Diablo’s temple-mausoleum, tackled in the iconic 1996 game of the same name (whose trailer, with corpses pecked at by crows and the ramshackle hut with the creaking door, remains to this day an example of brilliant cinematics).
As the hero, or heroine, that we choose to embody, we will go to New Tristram: an alien object will crash into the city, creating a crater from which hordes of monsters and the undead will emerge. After clearing out the enemies and meeting Leah, Deckard Cain’s niece, who is none other than the last descendant of the Horadrim, we will begin investigating what happened and uncovering the new Pandora’s box of the universe created by the folks at Blizzard.
Being an action RPG based on the customization of the character we will use, the choice of the initial Class will determine almost all of your hero’s reference parameters, from skills to usable weapons, as well as the mana-infused armor and garments that will guarantee passive abilities.
If we also include those released with the official expansions, there are seven classes, and the choice ranges from the classic Barbarian to the Conan style for those who love brute force, to the Gandalf-like Wizard, all the way to the darker but equally fascinating characters, such as the Demon Hunter or the Necromancer.
My playthrough, at the time, was marked by mystical martial arts: my female Monk wreaked havoc, and the satisfaction of giving mummies and Lords of Terror a good beating still lives on in my heroic knuckles. The loot system, moreover, is quite dynamic: this, along with the ability to customize every aspect such as equipment and the use of abilities based on the dungeon being tackled, makes the gameplay experience varied and never boring

Diablo III boasts an immense lore, and many products have been released over the years that have expanded the universe surrounding the eternal struggle between Tyrael’s angelic beings and the Prime Evils led by the powerful Diablo, “whose voice alone was enough to instill fear and terror in the hearts of men,” as stated in his official description.
But to face such a titanic evil, one hero is not enough, which is why co-op mode with friends will strengthen not only the fun, but also the gameplay; of course, it will change based on users’ inclinations in confronting the legions of monsters in what, it must be said, proved to be one of the best hack’n slash games of all time.
Diablo III will throw you into a dark forest teeming with cruel creatures, but fortunately you won’t have to defend yourselves with a pen like Dante: draw the greatsword you keep hidden under your desk, then, and let chaos reign supreme once again.

Pro

A worthy conclusion to the first trilogy of the saga that began in 1996: superb gameplay, frenetic combat, and all the fantasy atmosphere of its predecessors

In single player, fun and exciting, in co-op Diablo III is unbeatable

Game universe with a solid structure that provides many ideas for the fourth chapter

Contro

Visually rich settings, but ones that partly abandon the dark vibes with a gothic feel that had instead made the first Diablo, and also the second, though less so, so unique in its genre
